An interpretation of Alan Lee's design of the Tower of Orthanc from JRR Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings".
I first started modeling this in 3DSmax many years ago prior to the "Two Towers" film release as an Intro to 3D. Then actually finished it in Maya last year after taking courses in Maya at the Art Institute. It was quickly textured with a simple "pitted concrete" texture that I created in Photoshop. I didn't use the "Black Obsidian" look of the original description in the book and film because it hid all the details. I will finally complete the background and landscape later this summer, now that reference material is easier to come by. :-)
